The New York Times is reporting on a series of Cyber Attacks that have occurred over the past three years, which targeted critical energy and water infrastructure in the United States. The reports through the department of homeland security (DHS) issued Alert (TA18-074A).
How far did the hackers get? According to the Alert, the intruders had compromised the systems to a point where they could have easily turned off the electricity to many millions of people. Could they have also caused safety systems to shutdown, potentially endangering millions more people? That is not as clear at this point.
Who is responsible? DHS pointed the finger directly at Russia.
If you are involved with protecting critical infrastructure Alert TA18-074A and attachments are must-reads.
